In the late 1800s Rinsai made two sets of woodblock prints of flowers and birds. One set was published in book form and the other with prints sold individually. Fourteen prints from the latter set, entitled KachÅ Kurabe (i.e., Comparison of Flowers and Birds), are included in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Each picture shows an imaginary landscape with multiple species of flowers and birds, most of which the Japanese associate with a particular season of the year and (or) with a desirable human trait. All these species would be unlikely to be seen together in the real world so these fictitious pictures were probably intended to trigger pleasant associations, perhaps resulting in a purchase by viewers.
